#TTT 9/3/21 – Cleaning Up My Goodreads WTR Pile

The question no bookworm wants to hear: ‘So, how big is your want to read pile?’

As always, this great tag was originally created by The Broke and the Bookish but is now hosted over at That Artsy Reader Girl. Today’s prompt is all about Spring Cleaning and I figured it might be a good opportunity to try and attack my Goodreads Want To Read pile. I doubt this will make a dent because it’s a very big pile, but I’m having a go! There’s the ten most recent books on my WTR, and I’ll decide to either kick them off or keep them. All the images are from Goodreads too. Would you keep them? Have you read any yourself? Or want to share how massive your WTR pile is? Let me know in the comments!

1. Gentleman’s Guide To Vice And Virtue

Pros: EVERYTHING IS POSITIVES. A historical road-trip full of (from what I’ve heard) badass characters and a queer romance? The readers also enjoyed section on Goodreads is basically just my favourites shelf and the sequel is called The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy? Count me in.

Cons: I’m a bit late to the party? I remember everyone loving this book when it came out, but there’s definitely a reason it has so much hype.

Decision? KEEP. I’m 1000% buying this with my next book haul.

2. The M Word

Pros: We Come Apart by Conaghan and Sarah Crossan is one of my favourite prose books – that was what lead me to discover this one. I love the cover too.

Cons: Honestly, I don’t ever see myself ever reading it (it’s one of those…).

Decision? Ditch

3. The Miseducation Of Cameron Post

Pros: Last year, I watched the film adaptation and it was absolutely brilliant. I don’t make a habit of reading the book second, but I’d love to see how it was translated onto the screen.

Cons: It looks REALLY depressing. I don’t think I’d expect anything else from the themes it covers, but I don’t know if I’m ready right now to tackle this.

Decision? Keep

4. You

Pros: I still haven’t seen the tv show, so I doubt I’ll be reading the book any time soon. Books-of-serieses can be really interesting (like did you know that there’s a book of The Queen’s Gambit?).

Cons: Film covers = 🤮 You can find the full list of bookish things ever reader hates here, but covers with actors on them are always a no go for me. This is definitely a very valid reason to ditch a book! I’m also not sure if I could have Dan Humphrey staring creepily at me on my shelf *shudders*

Decision? Ditch

5. All The Light We Cannot See

Pros: The cover is beautiful. I’ve heard that that the writing is even more beautiful and it’s such an interesting premise.

Cons: Depressing books ≠ pandemic. (At least I think it’s depressing?)

Decision? Keep.

6. They Went Left

Pros: It has a very high rating! I’m the sort of reader that will add any book to my WTR pile if it has a rating higher than 4. Plus, I love the cover.

Cons: Again, depressing books ≠ pandemic. And I’m fairly certain that this won’t be a light read.

Decision? Keep.

7. The Picture Of Dorian Gray

Pros: I’ve always want to read a book by the icon himself… if not just so I can walk around with an Oscar Wilde book under my arm haha.

Cons: I am in no hurry to try Dorian Gray, but I’ll probably get to it one day!

Decision? Keep (I don’t know why it wasn’t on my WTR list sooner)

8. Paper Butterflies

Pros: It looks… moving??

Cons: There is barely any information in the blurb and it took me a second to even work out what the title was! I think I’ve added it after reading I Am Not A Number by the author last year, but I had my problems with that too.

Decision? Ditch.

9. Tweet Cute

Pros: This looks either very cute or a solid one star read. But I’d be willing to give it a go!

Decision? Keep.

Together We Caught Fire

Pros: Her life is turned upside down when her secret crush becomes her step brother… What in the Episode Wattpadness is this? Um not sure how this has ended up on my want to read list 😬

Cons: I’m just gonna repeat the premise again…
I was uncomfortable by The Mortal Instruments, there’s no way I’d be able to stomach this entire book!

Decision? DITCH DITCH DITCH

Pretty much any book I can get my hands on but my favourites are Young Adult, fantasy and science fiction. One day, I decided to share some of my opinions on some great - and not so great - books to people around the world. And here it is! I really enjoy it and I hope you do too. The aim is hundreds and thousands of book reviews (see what I did there?) but I’m not quite up to that. Yet.

  2. I also have yet to read A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. I hope to get to it soon!

    I wasn’t a huge fan of You (the book or the series). I knew I wasn’t supposed to like the main character (who is an obsessed stalker) but I actually disliked the girl that he was stalking even more than I disliked him! I don’t know if that was intentional, but it kind of ruined the book for me. I had watched the series first and had the same problem, so I decided to read the book, hoping the character would be written better there, but nope!

    I liked All The Light We Cannot See, but I’d wait for the pandemic to end before tackling it, if you’re not up for depressing reads now (totally understandable!)

    1. That’s really interesting about You! Yes, you were definitely not supposed to like the main character haha, but I haven’t heard anyone say that they didn’t like girl? I honestly haven’t watched/read either of them, but I’m not sure I want to now… I try and avoid true crime because they mess with my brain! Thanks for the advice about ATLWCS – it didn’t seem like the happiest of reads…

      1. I don’t think You is true crime, I think it’s fictional. Maybe that won’t mess with your brain as much! I think you should still give it a try, because I know other people who really liked it. So my opinion isn’t the popular one.

    1. Sad books are… sometimes my favourite? If I’m in the mood for crying my eyes out, there’s definitely a few books that come to mind 😂 😭 But I don’t like going into a book thinking it’s happy and then it’s really not- covers can be misleading haha. You too 🙂

  4. I’ve read two of these. I absolutely loved The Picture of Dorian Gray. It’s one of my favourite books and was actually considering rereading it. I wasn’t very keen on The Miseducation of Cameron Post. I thought I’d really enjoy it but it was slow and the characters were a bit flat. I’m hoping to read All the Light We Cannot See this year. I quite like sad books.

    1. Oh wow! Yeah I could see how the characters from Cameron post could come off as quite flat? Cameron wasn’t that likeable of a character but I think that was definitely part of what the author was going for (at least in the film ha). I have to admit that I also love sad books, but maybe not right now in a pandemic!

  5. The Doerr isn’t really all that depressing, and it is so beautifully written. Mind you, I recently read his previous novel, About Grace, and it was incredible (review soon)! As for cleaning my TBR… Funny, a while back I decided to remove anything from my Goodreads “to be read” list that I didn’t actually own in print, or that I didn’t actually have as a borrowed copy or that I didn’t already have as an ARC. My intention was to add all the print books I kept when I was packing up to move house. Problem is, I don’t have shelves for all these books yet so they’re all in boxes!!!

    1. I’ll keep an eye out for your review!! Yes it was so highly commended that I feel like I *should* read it (it’s one of those!). Ahh that sounds like a clever plan… in theory 😂 A big spring clear out of all my books sounds like a good idea but I’m not sure I have the motivation ha. Hope you sort it out!!

  11. I enjoyed Tweet Cute! Together We Caught Fire sounds like something I’d be uncomfortable reading too haha – the whole step-brother thing should be off limits! Great list, I feel like this spring cleaning of the TBR list should happen once a month, lol because my list is looonnnnggg.

  13. I wasn’t a huge fan of Gentleman’s Guide. The sequel I kinda liked, but that’s about it. The author’s actions are something that I something I can’t stand so I’m staying away from her books

      1. Attacked a reader over a question, bierased Monty, defaced other people’s books so the authors can’t sign those books ( just look up Mackenzie Lee defacing authors books especially by AoC), The Madness Bloom was transphobic and there was a lot of outcry when the book got closer to release
