Hey everyone! As always, this great tag was originally created by The Broke and the Bookish but is now hosted over at That Artsy Reader Girl. Today’s prompt is ‘new authors from 2020’, which is an interesting one. In 2020, I really didn’t have much to do except read and binge Netflix – I discovered so many authors that I don’t think I could narrow it down to ten! So, I’m going to try something thats been on my mind for AGES: top ten bookish things I hate. Do some of these irritate you too? Any other bookish things that drive you mad? Let me know in the comments ! 🙂

10. Things that look like stickers THAT AREN’T STICKERS
I don’t think I need to explain further 😦
*

9. Shiny Covers
Not only do these mean that it’s nearly impossible to take a photo of the book without being blinded by the reflection of your flash off the camera; they just feel a bit… tacky?
This isn’t the best example, but it was really hard to take a picture of this shiny covered book haha.
Speaking of Crier’s War… here’s my review of it! (That was so smooth).

8. Movie Covers
You know when the cover is a photo of the actors from an adaptation? Similarly, I hate it when the front of the book covered by a big sign about how it’s going to become a Netflix movie. I don’t care – I’m reading the book!
*
*

7. When You Miss The Warnings…
I want to start a campaign that books should have trigger warnings at the start of a book – because I’ve read some pretty dark stuff when I’m not expecting it. It was Holly Bourne (I should have known!), but when I read All The Places I’ve Cried In Public, I was halfway through before I spotted the tiny warning on the back.
On second thoughts, maybe the title should have been a slight red flag!!

6. When There’s Loads Of Blank Pages At The End Of A Book
What’s the point??
*
*

5. But Also…
At the same time, I don’t like it when the book ends on the last page? Like when the final page is opposite the back cover? I need a good in between!
*
4. When You Think A Book Isn’t Dark…

AND THEN IT IS! Sometimes covers can be really misleading… I think I need to realise that pastel colours don’t equal a happy book. A good (bad?) example of this is when I read More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer. I totally missed the (tiny) warning the back ↑
Also, I hate it when when you think that a book is a fun Young Adult book… and then turns out to be very adult. (Secrets of the Starcrossed who?).

3. IT’S NOT THE FIRST BOOK!
Admittedly, I haven’t done this a lot, but I quite often have to put back books in Waterstones because it’s the second or third book in the series.
Speaking of, I still need someone to explain to me how the Her Royal Highness series works – the firs book is of a totally different style to second (that’s another thing I hate 😦 ).

2. Reviews That Fill You With Dread
First of all, when did it become okay to replace blurbs with reviews? Whilst it’s interesting to know someone else’s’ opinion, I need to know what actually happens in the book not what Tim from the New York Times thought!
Then it’s when you see reviews talking about a ‘heart breaking ending’ that will ‘leave you in tears’… eeek.
When you lend a book and…
I love lending people books and getting to fan girl about it to them afterwards but its VERY irritating when I get it back:
- With the spine creased 😦
- Or just don’t get it back at all? I definitely have a few copies of the Maze Runner scattered around Manchester…
That was this week’s TTT! Do some of these irritate you too? Any other bookish things that drive you mad? Let me know in the comments ! 🙂
A lot of those irritate me as well! And in the same vein of picking up book two, the store I shop at will carry like the third book in a series, but not the first two. It’s infuriating. It’s happened multiple times.

YES I HATE THAT! Or when I’ve gone there with a specific book in mind and they *don’t have it* 😠

I am with you on quite a few of these but I think the biggest thing that irritates me is when the film adaptation cover replaces the book’s original cover. It drives me insane!!!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yesss I hate it when that happens! Probably one of the worst cases of that I can think of is that there’s some editions of Simon vs the Homo sapiens agenda that are actually called ‘love Simon’ after the movie! It is a bit of a mouthful haha… but the book came first 😦

For me, I find it annoying when the covers change part-way through a series and the series doesn’t look the same on my bookshelf 😂😂

Ugh yess! I get a lot of my books from charity shops and I have half of a series in one edition and the other half in an older one 😭 Or when the heights are different…
LikeLiked by 1 person
Height does annoy me, but what annoys me even more is when some books stick out more than others 😂
LikeLiked by 1 person
I hate that!! It’s so noticeable ugh

Haha this is gold! I hate all of these, except the lots of pages on the end, cos sometimes if its a classic, I write notes on those, instead of ruining a book *big brain moment* Ugh those not sticker things are awful, and the movie adaptation covers, especially if the movie was bad 😑 Oh, and those books that have a weird height difference? Like how do I put you on my shelf then! And picking up book 2 happens so often, and then I go look for book 1 and they don’t have it 😭
LikeLiked by 1 person
THATS SO SMART! I might have to give it a go 😉 I’m not really one of those people who stick loads of post it notes when they’re reading (I think I’d run out pretty quickly!) but I normally have a notepad nearby to write stuff down that I can look back at and think… what does that mean?! 😂 The height difference thing is very irritating 😠 and picking up the wrong book is such an awful feeling, especially when it looks so good!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Haha I remember reading a comment on YouTube saying that they did that, and now I have ever since. I too normally write in a notebook when the book is really special, and I just cannot write in it, or if I don’t have a physical copy but still want to study it 😄 Exactly! I once saw a fantasy that looked amazing, and only later did I realize it was the last book 😒

I’m so bad for lending books, I only let my mum and sister read them because I know they won’t damage them and I’ll get them back cause they’re in the same house!
LikeLiked by 1 person
That’s probably a good idea 😂 At least you can keep an eye on what’s going on! I always try not to say anything if they do any damage because *most* of the time it’s an accident… although my friend once dropped my book in the bath 🥲
LikeLiked by 1 person
In the bath no!! I would have cried. I hope they bought you a new one!

I agree with all of these. I get so annoyed when they have what looks like a sticker on it but it’s not a sticker. Why? I also don’t lend out books anymore because I either don’t get it back or I get it back damaged (with a broken spine or folded corners).
LikeLiked by 1 person
Arg when people fold the corners over on books it kills a little bit of my soul 😂 I dont see the need! Or the need in those weird stickers – maybe it’s saving the environment? 🤔 We’ll never know….

I’ve definitely been frustrated by the huge coming to Netflix or movie space that takes up the beautiful covers. And I’ve picked up a book in the middle of a series not even realizing it was part of a series. So frustrating! Great topic.
LikeLiked by 1 person
I’m with you there! 😫 It seems like such a waste to cover the cover with a Netflix sticker – especially when they’re those evil things that look like stickers BUT ARENT!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Printed on stickers are truly the worst!!!
I think the blank pages at the end of the book have something to do with printing but they can be a bit much! I just read Piranesi (which was incredible!) and there were like ten blank pages at the end!

Ooo I haven’t heard of that book, I’ll check it out! Yeah I have to admit I don’t know loads about publishing so that makes sense… but it’s still a bit odd!

I generally don’t like movie covers either. I love shiny books because they’re pretty. But I do hate trying to take photos of them. Great post!

I understand- things that look like stickers that aren’t. That is the only thing that came to mind. I also might hate buying the 2nd before the 1st- never have, but if I did that would be annoying.

Ha I can relate to SO many of these! I hate stickers on books, but the ones that are actually printed on the covers are so much worse!!! And totally agree about the review bit too, I don’t mind reviews on book, but still want the blurb there so I can actually know what its about 😀
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yesss I’m glad you understand the *pain* of the review blurb thing 😂 It’s often really interesting to see what people thought of the book… but I still need to know what happens!!

1. Stickers- when they look like one, but aren’t
2. Different editions of the same series- I try to buy in the same editions

Im totally with you on the editions thing! And then they can be really hard to track down if the publishers are set on trying to get people to buy the new edition 😢

Ha ha, this is a very relatable list! I don’t want to come across a puritan, but in terms of content warnings, I wish there was a reliable way to tell how explicit romance content is. I don’t read much romance, but I will if a friend recommends a book, and it’s so annoying to unexpectedly end up in an anatomically described sex scene when I thought I was just reading a light, fun romantic story. I hardly ever lend books anymore. I love being able to talk about books I love with friends, but I have lost just too many books over the years. Ugh, and bent spines or covers or spills drive me nuts. (I have one close friend who now just buys me a new cover if the loaner gets damaged — usually it’s her kitties’ fault.)
LikeLiked by 1 person
No I totally get what you mean. Covers and reviews can be so misleading to what’s *actually* in the book lol and I think that some people could come across some really triggering stuff in what looks like a basic romance. Or some… not age appropriate stuff haha. Awww I guess if it’s the fault of their pet you can let it slide (depending how cute the cat is 😉)

This is a great idea for a topic. Creased spines and not getting your book back at all are definitely annoying.

Yeah! Creased spines are sometimes unavoidable – I know someone who reads with the book open like an inch to try and not crack the spine but that’s seems a *little* excessive 😂

Oh wow, this was a very interesting read and a great blog.
I feel you pain with most of them. I hate when a book ends on the last page. Before i even star reading books I like to flip to the book and see what there is ( i know I’m weird). It is a struggle to not squint at the last line if there isn’t any pages with information on it.
Psssss i take so much care when i read others people books but unfortunately not everyone takes care, hence why i have trust issues 😤😭

ITS SO HARD NOT TO LOOK AT THE LAST PAGE! Hello yes I am a fellow weirdo who flicks to the back… mostly to find out how many pages are in it but there’s probably a better way to find out that doesn’t possible spoil the book 😬

Stickers that aren’t actually stickers and movie covers drive me crazy! I get that the content of the book is exactly the same, but still. I actually have a book on my TBR pile that has the movie cover and I’m genuinely tempted to buy another edition and read that instead 😂
LikeLiked by 1 person
Ooo that’s always a tough temptation!! I have a couple of books that I’d didn’t *love*… but the new editions are so pretty that I feel like I NEED to buy them! (It’s very justified 😂)

Okay, I didn’t even know that there are warnings written at the back of a book. 10 years of reading life, not once have I noticed it 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️. It is written in such small text🤦♀️It is so easy to miss. When will writers understand TW are not spoilers, geez. And I also hate shiny covers. I love colourful covers so so much more. I don’t at all understand the hype behind shiny covers!

Haha I only about 3 books with warnings on the back, so I’m not surprised that you’ve missed it 😂. YES they’re not spoilers!! I just don’t want to read ultra violent stuff, I’d like to know before hand! I’m glad you’re with me on the shunt covers haha

Haha – love your list.
couple of my own – 1 – “oh, are you reading” – no, I have a book planted in front of my face just to hide. (2) Cover changes part way through a series – why, just why for the love of all that is sacred is this a necessary thing? I am baffled. (3) glossaries and other useful things at the back of the book – because it’s not really as useful as it could be when I only come across them when I finish the last page.
Lynn 😀

Oh my gosh yes the glossaries are the worst. Generally they’re kind of helpful (mostly on how to actually pronounce characters names lol) but why put them at the back?? It only makes me think that there’s more to the book but noooo it’s just a handy guide to things I was confused about… 150 pages ago 😠

Great list! It’s clearly one that a lot of us readers can relate to. My biggest peeve is definitely when movie/tv show covers replace the original. Just… Don’t?! Like, why?! So annoying 🙈 Also, this is quite silly of me, but I totally never noticed the warning notes on the back of books before! I don’t even know how I didn’t know that was a thing–I guess I never pay much attention to the back except to read the blurb if it’s there. Haha, so thank you for that revelation 😂

YES movie covers are the worst 😫 Sometimes they can look quite cool but they’re never going to beat the original. Haha I only have one or two books with warnings (that I’ve spotted…) but many more that probably deserves ones!
